Using your browser, generate your site's instruction Web pages from the CRIS Web Forms, Administrative Functions ("http://cwf.uvm.edu/cris/admin.htm"), Generate instructions for Investigators link. Select your site and use your administrative password.
From your browser toolbar, choose FILE, SAVE AS.... Select the drive or path to write the file to. You can select any name, but the extension needs to be .htm or .html.
If you want to use the image included on the instruction page as shown, you will also need to retrieve this file.
To download a copy of the sunflowers, locate your mouse pointer on the image. Right click, and SAVE AS..... the default being "sunflowr.jpg" and enter the correct path or drive to write the file to.
Using your favorite word processor (i.e. WordPerfect, MS Word, Notepad, etc.), open the instruction page HTML file. If your word processor does not recognize the format, choose ASCII (DOS) Text format for conversion. Add or delete any information within the text of the HTML document. Use HTML tags for additional text if needed.
Possible modifications:
The generated CRIS WebForms instructions ask the PI to "enter your name." If you have duplicate last names of PIs at your site, you may want to modify the instructions, asking for first initials, and second initials if the CRIS data contains this information. If you don't need the initials for uniqueness, do not instruct the PI to enter them. If a PI enters both of their initials, but only one is listed in the CRIS database, the project will not be found in the CRIS WebForms project list searching.
After any edits, be sure to save your HTML document in ASCII (DOS) Text format with the .htm or .html extension.
To view your HTML instruction document:
Using your browser, select OPEN and enter the file name and location of your HTML document (i.e. "C:\CRISWEB\421inst.htm"). If you are using the image files, these will need to be in the same subdirectory as your instruction HTML file. Print a copy of this instruction Web page from your browser to distribute to your researchers. You may choose to host the instruction page on a Web server at your site and direct your researchers to print their own copy. You will need to move the HTML files to your own server and provide the location (URL) of your modified instruction pages to your researchers. NOTE: If you post your instructions on the web, you will want to remove your site's listed password on the generated instructions and insert a phrase such as "enter password provided" etc., to ensure your site's security.

Other options:
The instruction Web page can also be saved as a TEXT document (minus any HTML tags) and used as the base for a word processing document. In your browser, after generating the Instructions for Investigators, select FILE, SAVE AS....., enter a file name XXXXX.txt and choose file type Plain text (*.txt). Edit this text file in your favorite word processor, customizing the instructions for your site. Print the instructions to be distributed to your researchers.

Helpful Hints:
Generate and print your site's checklist; selecting all projects and sort by investigator, to check for differences or errors in the last name field for PI's.
For example: a PI listed as "Jones" in one project and "Jones, Jr." in another will not appear in the same project list generated from the CRIS Web Forms search. If "Jones" is entered for the last name field on the CRIS Web Forms AD-421 project list search, the project listed for "Jones, Jr." will not appear, and vice versa.
Any mis-spellings will also cause a mis-match for the project list searching.
